A University of Calabar Students’ Union Government welfare official, Comr. Omini Sophia has renovated two separate apartments in halls 8 and 6 of the varsity’s hostel destroyed by fire, over two years ago.
When CrossRiverDaily visited the said apartments, the renovation was already 100% completed with new electrical connections, bulbs, fan, curtains and other furnitures like carpet, wardrobes, etc fully installed.
Speaking with CrossRiverDaily, the Director of Welfare, Comr. Omini said the renovation exercise was part of his campaign promises which he made to Nigerian students while seeking their mandate. He explained that since the apartments were razed by fire, sometime in 2018, no students’ administration had taken its repairs into consideration, stressing that the rooms, since thenafter, have been left out of use as they were overly inhabitable.
Omini, a native of Mkpani in Yakurr Local Government Area and fourth year level student of Science Laboratory Technology, Faculty of Biological Sciences noted that his motive was to shelter students, especially of the first year level who have nowhere to live, at least for the time being before the school authority should give them out to their respective legal occupants.
Thanking the school authority for giving the nod for him to undertake the project, Omini said his motivation came from the Vice Chancellor’s uncompromising commitment in the area of infrastructure. Howthat, he only wanted to tow the path of the V.C, Prof. Zana I. Akpagu, a man he described as “All Time Best Welfare Oriented” vice chancellor of the university, even as he also praised the school’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Enang Udah for his continuous support to students’ wellbeing.
Omini went ahead to disclose to CrossRiverDaily that the project was courtesy his personal funds as no monies were voted to his office for this purpose. He seized the gesture to advise all prospective students’ leaders to thread his path, reiterating that the prime purpose of the students’ governing body was leadership towards the betterment of the students welfare and nothing short of that.
