Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly Rt. Hon John Gaul Lebo has expressed shock over the sudden demise of his colleague and friend, Rt. Hon Stephen Akomaye Ukpukpen who passed on yesterday, Wednesday May 30, 2018 at 7am along Moore Road in Calabar while having a workout.
The lawmaker who slumbed during exercise was said to have been rushed to a nearby Navy Clinic, but medical officials on duty said he was in a critical condition and therefore recommended that he be transferred to another hospital.
He was confirmed dead by medical officials in a private hospital where he was later taken to and thereon certified dead by the Anatomy Unit of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
In a press statement signed by Mr. Azogor Ideba, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker and made available to CrossRiverDaily, the Speaker described Hon Ukpukpen’s passage as very saddening, heart wrenching and a great loss not only to the Assembly community but to the entire state.
“As Member Representing Obudu State Constituency not only was he a good representative of his people, he was a very outspoken legislator who always stood for the truth.
“His vibrancy and legislative know-how which traversed the 7th apparently earned him a second term in the Assembly and subsequently, Chairman House Committee on Public Accounts.
“We have lost a gem in the 8th Assembly. His wisdom and legislative acumen will forever be missed.
Stephen indeed, has left a vacuum in the 8th Assembly,” the statement read.
