The Cross River State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. John Gaul Lebo yesterday in Abi flagged off the Cross River State Health Insurance Scheme for Abi constituents.
The flag off which held at the School of Nursing, Itigidi had Rt. Hon. Oniofiok Luke, Speaker, Akwa Ibom State Assembly as chief guest and Hon. Eteng Jones, Hon. Nelson Ofem, members representing Yakurr 2 and 1 State constituency respectively; Dr. Barnaba Genevieve, Ayade Cares Coordinator; Dr. Inyang Asibong, Health Commissioner; Mr. Agbara Edet, Abi HOLGA; Comr. Egbe Awoh, PDP Abi Chair; HRH Ovai Edward, Abi Paramount Ruler, and all traditional rulers in Abi Local Government; et’al as guests.
With the objective of providing basic health services to the people of Abi, The Speaker said “every council ward in Abi now has a small hospital to handle minor health challenges like malaria, back pain, ear fault, etc, while complicated issues are to be referred to the Eja Memorial Hospital for higher attention and thereafter to Calabar if the case so demands”.
On the scope of the programme, the Rt. Hon. said no participant was expected to pay a dime whatsoever. Howthat, he has made provisions for sufficient drugs, an available ambulance, a bus and adequate arrangement to see-off the entire Abi receive first-class primary health services for the next two weeks the programme would last.
Concerning the sustainability of the programme, Hon. John Gaul said that the medical team would, everyday attend to one council ward and that any ward which one day was not enough to attend to all the participants, the team was to do two days. Meanwhile, after the two weeks must have been exhausted, one week would be taken from every month to check on the team’s record for followup treatment and this will continue for a period of one year – till 11th April, 2019.
By the end of the exercise, courtesy of the record keeping duty of the team, The Speaker said it should have been easier to know the peculiar health challenge(s) common to a particular ward in the LGA and in-turn, improve health servicing in the area which was his key promise to the people of Abi at the last elections.
Commending The Speaker on providing for the people of Abi health security which according to him is the best security any leader could provide, Hon. Nelson Ofem stressed that the health services were not party constrained. Howthat, loyalists of other political parties are as qualified as loyalists of PDP to benefit from the programme.
Assuring The Speaker of maximum support, the Paramount Ruler of Abi, HRN Ovai Edward who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers said they will do their best to sensitizing their respective subjects to taking full participation in the programme.
An attandee who gave her name as Mrs. Mary Edu told CrossRiverDaily that whenever she queues to cast her vote in any election, she does so with the paryer that the person upon which she would thumbprint should be someone with concerns about the people’s health. Mrs. Edu highlighted that of all the people demand from government, health was basic and a must-provide. Thus, praising God for having answered her prayers while describing Rt. Hon. John Gaul as a “God sent”.
