OPINION: Ayade’s Aide Cast Lot On Eteng Jones Over 9th Assembly Speakership

As Speaker, Eteng Jones will pursue a Pan-CRS agenda. The CRSHA under his leadership will earn a reputation for itself for standing up for the ordinary citizens on the street through the passage of laws and motions that aim to improve the material condition of their existence and stabilize the polity.

I have been dancing “Shaku Shaku” since Rt. Hon. Eteng Jones Williams dusted the APC aspirants to clinch a third term to represent the people of Yakurr 11 State Constituency. With votes nearly twenty times higher to his closest challenger, it was no contest really. It wasn’t even keen. It was a rout. A panel beating. It’s almost humanly impossible not to gloat especially when viewed against the background of the campaign of bile and vile mounted by the challengers.

Rt. Hon. Eteng Jones Williams’ victory wasn’t an accident. It was actually foretold. On account of his record of service delivery and appropriate representation, he has earned the mandate. The recent result is a testimony.

Today in Yakurr 11 State Constituency, everywhere you look at, you see him in the eyes and hearts of his constituents. It demands a lot of political savvy, prime among which is the ability to command followership. And this is where Eteng Jones’ leadership credentials have buffeted the grand posturing of his political opponents and traducers.

When Eteng decided to try his hand in partisan politics, many looked upon him as just another joker seeking to satisfy yet another craving for power and relevance. But as we would suddenly realize, here was a man whose heart was out there with the people, the common men and women in the streets. Eteng had no illusions about the toughness of the task he was about to undertake, but his eyes were trained on the objective – to first win the people’s heart, then votes; which comes with a huge opportunity and privilege to represent his people in the CRS House Of Assembly. This, again for Eteng was just a means to an end – the opportunity to serve and add value to the lives of his constituents.

The rest, as the old saying goes, is now history. Eteng had a dream, a vision and mission in the CRSHA – to redefine the parameters of leadership where service to the people is the cornerstone. It is this new vision of leadership that Eteng espoused in his first two terms, marking him out as one of the most outstanding lawmakers CRSHA has ever had. It therefore leaves little to the imagination, come June, 2019; Rt. Hon. Eteng Williams shall contest and receive the overwhelming mandate of his colleagues to lead the 9th Cross River Assembly as its Speaker.

And we must never miss the point, again that Eteng Jones was and remains the symbol of the transformation witnessed in the 8th Assembly where sanity and stability is visibly noticed due to his staunch support and loyalty to the John Gaul led State Assembly. If our memory does not fail us, we would recall the chicanery that was the hallmark of legislative practices and procedures in the the pre-John Gaul’s era.

As Speaker, Eteng Jones will pursue a Pan-CRS agenda. The CRSHA under his leadership will earn a reputation for itself for standing up for the ordinary citizens on the street through the passage of laws and motions that aim to improve the material condition of their existence and stabilize the polity.

As this opportunity presents itself when the 9th CR Assembly will be inaugurated later in the year, our only hope and prayers is that the Almighty God continues to endow him with the needed strength and wisdom to carry to logical conclusion at the end of his term, the radical transformation and evolution that the 7th and 8th Assembly has come to witness. Needless to add that all the accolades and recognitions that are daily being bestowed on him are well deserved. But more poignantly, there are calls to spur him for further dedication and selfless service to our fatherland in the days, weeks, months and years to come.
