Both serving and past leaders as well as concerned elites of National Association of Odukpani Students World Wide (NAOS-WW) have reiterated their stands in the controversial elections for the 2019/2020 administrative year as they pointedly noted that Comrade God’swill Andong was the duly elected president and is the authentic leader of the executive council (EXCO) following his inauguration of May 30th, 2019.
The position of the stakeholders was necessitated upon the inauguration of Comrade Emmanuel Ita as president of NAOS-WW.
Investigation by Cross River Daily revealed that the aspiration of both God’swill Andong and Emmanuel Ita has tossed NAOS-WW into two parallel executive bodies with the students at the center, not knowing who exactly to call, Mr. President.
Cross River Daily notes that NAOS-WW elections are often conducted for only registered chapters of the union, namely, University of Calabar (UNICAL) Chapter, Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH) Chapter, College of Health Technology (COHTECH) Chapter, and College of Education (COE) Chapter. However, on election day, 18th May, 2019, the electoral body, under the leadership of Comr. Bassey Emmanuel and Comr. Jacob Okon as Chairman and Secretary, respectively, received a list of delegate voters from UNICAL Chapter, COHTECH Chapter, COE Chapter, and, instead of receiving only one list from CRUTECH Chapter, it received lists from CRUTECH Calabar Campus, CRUTECH Ogoja Campus and CRUTECH Obubra Campus which are not registered chapters but campuses.
The number of delegate voters list goaded a misunderstanding that led to the postponement of the election with the electoral body promising to hold a dispute-resolution congress to iron matters.
However, as days pass into weeks and weeks into no way forward, the forum of chapters presidents met and gave the electoral body an ultimatum to call for the dispute-resolution congress. When the said congress was later called, Cross River Daily was told the electoral chairman, Comr. Bassey Emmanuel was suspended in absentia for failing to call for it as at when due, absenting himself from the said congress, and other offences. Thus, the Secretary of the committee, Comr. Jacob Okon and other members were mandated to go about with the election process.
Consequently, on May 29th, 2019 an election was conducted for the four (4) registered chapters and Comr. God’swill Andong emerged as president after beating his rival, Comr. Emmanuel Ita to 23 votes. Accordingly, Andong was inaugurated a following day, May 30th under the administration of Barr. Otaba Otaba.
Controversially, few days after the said inauguration, another inauguration was held in the absence of the suspended electoral body Chairman, the Secretary, members and Legal Adviser. The second inauguration proclaims Comr. Emmanuel Ita the supposed president of NAOS-WW.
At the moment, the stakeholders, elites and electoral body have made a statement disregarding Comr. Ita as president vice versa, upholding Comr. Andong as authentic president; though, it remains uncertain whom the students will take for a president.
