INEC To Conduct Bye-Election For Cross River House Of Assembly

Following the death of Hon. Stephen Ukpukpen, member representing Obudu I State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has disclosed that preparations were underway for a bye-election to fill the late honourable’s seat.

In a statement by its National Commissioner, Mr Malam Mohammad Haruna on Friday in Abuja, the commission said the development follows the official notification received from the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John Gaul Lebo.

In his words, “INEC wishes to inform the public that it has today received information from the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly about an existing vacancy in the state Assembly”.

The commission also said that similar reports have reached them from Bauchi South and Kastina North where they are also vacancies created by demise of the senators representing both districts at the national assembly, stating that “the commission will, in accordance with relevant Constitutional and Statutory provisions, issue a detailed timetable and schedule of activities next week Ieading to the conduct of the polls to fill these vacancies.”
