The Cross River State chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC Mr. Etim John has said that the ward congresses of the party that did not hold on Saturday as scheduled held on Sunday and that the results are expected to be announced later today, Tuesday, 8th May.
According to Mr. Etim, congresses took place on Sunday after efforts by some leaders of the party to scuttle the exercise the previous day failed and party members and executives from the 196 wards of the state went ahead and voted on Sunday.
“I have heard in some places that ward congresses have been suspended in Cross River but that is not true as voting is going on now in some wards while results are being collated in others. The only authority with the power to suspend the congresses from taking place is the National Working Committee of our party or the National Executive Committee of the party and we have not received contrary directive from the two bodies. So the congresses went on in Cross River State,” Mr. John said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, CrossRiverDaily understands that after the exercise failed to hold on Saturday, the materials were handed over to the police.
The Police Commissioner who spoke to newsmen yesterday on the matter said contrary to the claims by the party’s state Chairman, they are still in possession of the congress materials. He said; “The Command has not released any material to any APC member for the conduct of the congresses in the state. The stakeholders agreed among themselves after their earlier disagreement on Saturday, that they would not entrust the congress materials to any of them and brought them to the Police.
“They handed over the materials to the area commander in his office. Even in the night (Sunday) and even up to this time I am talking to you, the area commander has not told me that he has released the materials to anybody. He cannot release the materials without my instruction.
“We prevented blood bath on Saturday and if not for the quick intervention of the Police, what we would have heard today would have been devastating. We thank God for Police quick intervention.”
Owan Enoh Blames Usani…
In the same vein, the Senator representing Cross River Central in the National Assembly and chairman Finance Committee, Sen. Owan Enoh has blamed the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Usani for the confusion rocking the party in the state, accusing him of plotting to hijack the party’s structure in the state.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Owan alleged that Usani compromised the Stan Ekeje-led committee sent to the state to conduct the congress while insisting that the ward congress did not hold in the 196 wards of the state.
Eno also enjoined the John Odigie-Oyegun-led national working committee (NWC) to constitute an independent panel to conduct the congresses in the state, stating that key stakeholders of the party would resist any attempts by Usani to submit any results that could convey the impression that the ward congresses actually held.
When contacted on telephone, Usani declined to comment on the issue adding: “Go and talk to the congress chairman and the state chairman of the party.”
